Provenance:
Collection of Eckard Wagner (1941–2019), Schloss Clemenswerth, Germany
The present work is based on two of Rembrandt’s self-portraits (both circa 1629), one in the Mauritshuis, The Hague and the other in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, Nürnberg.
The painting has been examined by the Deutsches Archäologisches Institut, Berlin, leading to the conclusion that the wood panel used for the support had been felled around 1630 (a written report, dated
5 May 2020, is available).
