Kuzma: From ankle bone bruise to morning skate, Boeser eager to play tonight

There was a Brock Boeser sighting Tuesday morning.

The hotshot Vancouver Canucks rookie wasn’t on crutches or sporting a walking cast. He was on the ice and taking part in the morning skate. And then he was talking about playing against the Montreal Canadiens at Rogers Arena and trying to find a way to beat Carey Price.

It’s quite the quick turnaround from what occurred Sunday, when the winger was struck on the left ankle by a Mark Giordano wrist shot. Boeser, the club’s leading scorer with 30 points (17-13) in 31 games, dropped like a rock after the shot block and crawled to the bench in excruciating pain. He didn’t return and everybody feared the worst.

However, a CT scan Monday revealed that the Calder Trophy favourite had only suffered a bone bruise. And while that can be painful and keep any player off the ice for a few days, Boeser sounded like he’s willing to push the envelope tonight, as long as he can manage the pain.

“Obviously, it’s feeling better by the day and still sore, but we felt I could try skating and we’ll try it in warm-up tonight,” said Boeser. “When they ruled out a fracture, we wanted to test it. Obviously, we were concerned when it hurt so bad and I wasn’t able to put any pressure on it for any length of time. That’s why I was hobbling to the bench.

“I knew we were on a power play and I was just trying to get off the ice as fast as possible.”

OVERTIME — The recalled Reid Boucher, who leads the Utica Comets with 25 points (13-12) will draw in against the Canadiens and the struggling Ben Hutton will sit to allow Erik Gudbranson to return from injury.
