Create unique gifts or commemorate Remembrance Day with Jill Alblas’ decoupaged candle holders
Learn how to take your decoupage to the next level by trying out this beautiful project. Designer Jill Alblas has used napkins rather than standard papers, plus crackle lacquer and gold wax, to create this unique look. Pretty candle holders make great presents, as they look lovely but are also inexpensive to craft. Be sure to select glass tumblers that fit the size of your candles. Alternatively, if you want to add an extra hand-crafted element to your gift, why not make the candles too?
YOU WILL NEED:
Effekt Crackle, Steps 1 and 2
Inka-Gold wax
Napkins: poppy, geranium
Glass tumblers
Acrylic paint, red
Paintbrush
Glue
Candles
METHOD:
1. Cut out three poppy and stem motifs from napkins, leaving a border around each. Apply a thin, even coat of glue to an area on a tumbler and adhere a poppy to it, smoothing gently with a brush.
2. Trim three more blooms and glue to the bottom and base of the glass. Tear plain napkin pieces, stick between the gaps and leave to dry.
3. Liberally coat the surface with Step 1 of crackle lacquer and allow to dry before applying Step 2, leaving overnight. Once dry, apply Inka wax to the decoupage using your finger, then buff using a slightly damp cloth.
4. Scrape off any excess from the rim of the glass, then paint red using a fine brush and pop a candle inside. Make a smaller geranium tumbler to complete the set.
