Scrappy (Maple) Leaves Quilt

You know people who decorate for all the holidays? All the pumpkins, corn stalks, bats and cobwebs? Our house isn’t like that. At all. My 7 year old daughter is completely appalled by my lack of decorating. I know she will have boxes and boxes of decorations for every holiday when she grows up.

I’m hoping this Scrappy Leaves Mini Quilt will appease her a bit. The minimalist in me likes it because it’s simple and can be used September - November.  Plus I can use it as either a table topper or a wall hanging.  Add in the fact that I made it in a couple of afternoons with just my scraps and you get a winner of a project.

Today I’m guest posting on Amy Smart’s blog, Diary of a Quilter, and share all the instructions for making this Scrappy Leaves Mini Quilt. The Scrappy Leaves are foundation paper pieced (of course!) and are a lot of fun to make. Head over to Diary of a Quilter to get all the info.

UPDATE (10/21): I have a new Scrappy Leaves pattern with 5 leaf variations in 7 different sizes! If you love these leaves, you’ll love the expanded Scrappy Leaves pattern. Hop on over to my shop and check it out!

But, of course, this isn’t the only quilt you can make with this foundation. I thought I would share some different quilt layout ideas using the Scrappy Leaf quilt block. I’m not going to give instructions for how to make all of the quilts, but hopefully the pictures will help you see the different options.

Quilt Ideas using the Scrappy (Maple) Leaf Quilt Block

19” x 19” Here is the same mini quilt, but with the stems all facing in instead of downwards.

Approx. 52” x 71” with 1” sashing and 1” border. This quilt has the same layout as the mini quilt, just expanded.

59” x 59” with 1” sashing and no border. Here the blocks are sew together in the standard way (not on point). I really love grouping them by color. They are so beautiful!

8” x 50” If you’re looking for a smaller project try sewing 7 blocks together with 1” sashing. I think it is fun to have the leaves change from green to brown.

8” x 50” Here’s the same table runner but with the leaves alternating dictions so the runner doesn’t seem ‘upside down’ from one side of the table.

I hope these mock ups have given you some ideas. Have fun digging though your scraps and making a beautiful fall quilt.
