The inaugural George Butler Memorial Scholarship Family Fun Walk will be held Saturday in memory of beloved North Lake Elementary School Principal George Butler.
In December 2020, North Lake lost their principal and friend. The community has chosen to carry on Butler’s legacy in education by offering a scholarship to graduating seniors from Franklin County High School who formerly attended North Lake Elementary.
In an interview with the Herald Chronicle in May 2019, Butler was spotlighted in the “Principal’s Corner” column and asked about his views on students and education in general. He was more than happy to share what he enjoyed most about his profession.
“I like working with amazing students and speaking words of support and encouragement,” Butler had said. “I value being a part of a student’s level of confidence that results in academic growth and successes in and out of school. Students have many challenges and issues. Words of support and encouragement spoken by the teacher, principal and other school employees will be long remembered more for the support and encouragement than the lessons that were taught in the classroom.”
The Family Fun Walk will be held Saturday from 9-11 a.m. at the old Franklin County High School football stadium. The event will include the titular walk, a kids shuttle run, food trucks, STEM activities and much more.
A donation drive, hosted by North Lake, will be held to raise funds and provide for this year’s scholarship recipient. The donation drive is now underway and will continue through Saturday.
Donations are being accepted from businesses and individuals. All businesses who donate will be recognized on the day of the event.
Anyone who wishes to donate on the day of the event may make checks payable to the George Butler Scholarship Fund. Donations may also be made at FirstBank in Decherd.
