Description

Known as meadowsweet, Filipendula ulmaria is a highly attractive plant, ideal for growing in damp soil and boggy areas, such as by the edge of a pond. It is mostly grown for its foliage, which emerges a fresh golden-green in spring, and then fades to gold in summer, especially when grown in strong sunlight. Some people allow Filipendula ulmaria to flower, but this isn’t necessarily how it looks its best.

The summer blooms are a soft, creamy-white, with a strong, sweet scent. Bees, butterflies and other pollinators love them. However, the meadowsweet plant puts much of its energy into developing the flower stalks and, by removing these stalks as soon as they become visible, plants save energy and therefore develop larger, more pronounced foliage. This looks better to some people, and also prevents plants self-seeding.

Meadowsweet has a long history of herbal use, being one of the most sacred herbs of the ancient Druids. The leaves and stems have been used as an anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and aromatic astringent.
