European Badger (Meles meles)

The European Badger (Meles meles) is a robust and nocturnal mammal native to Europe and parts of Asia. Recognizable by its distinct black-and-white facial markings and stocky build, the European badger is known for its digging prowess, creating extensive underground burrow systems known as setts. With a body length of about 60 to 90 cm (24 to 36 inches) and a bushy tail, it weighs between 10 to 24 kg (22 to 53 pounds). Omnivorous in diet, European badgers consume a wide range of foods, including earthworms, insects, small mammals, fruits, and roots. They play a crucial role in maintaining ecosystem balance by controlling pest populations and contributing to soil aeration through their digging activities. European badgers are primarily crepuscular and nocturnal, emerging from their setts at night to forage for food.
