Susan S. Early of Sag Harbor, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, died peacefully at Peconic Landing in Greenport on September 11. She was 90.

She grew up in Pocantico Hills in Tarrytown, and was a long-time resident of Sag Harbor, New York City and Darien, Connecticut.

After graduating from Mount Holyoke College, she began her 50-plus year career at Smith Barney. As one of the only women working as an analyst in the 1950s, Early was assigned coverage of the cosmetics industry. Later, she became as successful broker and was the first female vice president at the New York Securities Brokerage firm. She also earned the designation as a chartered financial analyst.

In addition to her impressive career, friends and family will remember her exquisite sense of style, fantastic cooking, and engaging conversation. As an avid collector, her knowledge and love of early American antiques could be seen throughout the rooms of her carefully curated home in Sag Harbor and her stylish apartment in New York.

Early enjoyed playing tennis, sailing, and music with friends and family throughout many summers at the Devon Yacht Club. As an active participant in her community, she was a longtime member of the Brick Church, a member of the Women’s Association at Brick Church and the Cosmopolitan Club.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Edward S. Early. She is survived by her daughter, Edwina Early Annicelli; her stepchildren, William W. Helman IV, Eliza J. Kraft, Rebecca S. Helman; and seven grandchildren, Katherine Shea Annicelli and Dorothy Christine Annicelli, Rachel Gerli, Aleah Vickers, Julia Hope Quigley, Beatrice P. Helman and William W. Helman.

The family will hold a memorial in 2024.

Time To Talk

Let’s start with a clear message: The Eastville Community Historical Society is an incredibly valuable commodity for Sag Harbor, and its new request to the school district to begin levying a community tax to provide about $75,000 a year for “general use, maintenance and capital improvement financing” is not at all unreasonable. That’s particularly true in the context of the Sag Harbor Whaling & Historical Museum’s existing annual levy, and its recent request to more than double it to $125,000 a year. But with the new request, it might be time for the school district, and Sag Harbor as a ... 1 May 2024 by Editorial Board
