What is the White Frost?

In the game Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt, created by CD Projekt Red, you play Geralt of Rivia, a witcher by trade.  A witcher is a genetically enhanced human who has gone through brutal physical training and physically altering magic and science for the sole purpose of hunting and killing monsters that threaten the land, for a price.  Geralt is a bit different than most witchers in two regards.  He is extremely good at hunting and killing monsters, and he has an adopted daughter.  Through a series of extraordinary and unique events, Geralt was charged with raising and taking care of a little girl named Ciri, a princess capable of traveling between worlds.  While Geralt and Ciri run and eventually fight those that wish to exploit Ciri’s abilities, a prophecy of cataclysmic proportion is being fulfilled.  The prophecy foretells of an unstoppable force called the White Frost coming and freezing the planet.  Some believe the prophecy to be complete poppycock, but Ciri’s travels across the multiverse has shone her that not only is the White Frost real, but it truly is unstoppable.  There are events in the multiverse called Conjunctions of Spheres, where the veil between worlds becomes so thin, entire species are able to move between them.  In one of these events, the White Frost enters Geralt’s world.  By the time the White Frost begins encroaching on Geralt’s world, it has claimed thousands of worlds already.

At the end of the game, Ciri enters a portal leading to the White Frost created by the Conjunctions of Spheres.  On the other side, the only visible thing is a bright, white light that is the source of the cold winds and snow.  Then, the screen goes black and it is proclaimed that Ciri successfully stopped the White Frost from ever destroying another world, including Geralt’s.  However, it is never made clear as to what the White Frost is.  I theorize that the White Frost is two things.  It is a planet with a constant magical spell that cools everything around it, and a planet that has had its veil between the other worlds of the multiverse significantly weakened.  Ciri’s powers to travel between worlds is derived from her true ability to control the veil between worlds.  She can weaken the veil at will, going to different universes as she pleases.  However, it is theoretically possible for her to do the opposite.  Thus, for her to ‘defeat’ the White Frost, whe would simply have to strengthen the veil between the White Frost’s world and the rest of the multiverse.  Plus, the only image of the White Frost seen is that of a bright ball of light, which means it is actively using energy to create the cold, and not simply absorbing the different worlds’ heat to the point of oblivion.  Essentially, the White Frost is not a hole in your jacket making you cold, but instead it is more like a giant fan blowing in your face cooling you to the point of hypothermia.  Thus, the White Frost is not a force of nature nor an inevitable end to every universe, but is more likely the accidental by-product of someone or a group of people messing with magic they should better have left alone.
