1 Utah Food Bank BY KAYLA LYMAN

2 What is it?  The Food Bank is a non-profit organization that is mainly based around the United States.  They provide a warehouse that takes food donations, and divides it up amongst the needy.

3 What is the purpose?  The main purpose of the Food Bank is to provide hunger relief to those who cannot provide for themselves.  This is often times the homeless, or those who are not currently generating income/very minimal income.

4 Who founded it?  John Van Hengel founded the first Food Bank in Pheonix, Arizona.  He began as an avid volunteer for the Soup Kitchen when he began to collect people’s surplus of food to deliver to either the homeless or directly to the Soup Kitchen. He wanted a place that would would share in time efficiency and productivity. A place that would later grow to.  Currently the food bank has numerous warehouses in almost every state in the U.S

5 How does one get involved?  Find one’s local food bank and feedingamerica.org, to set up an appointment to volunteer at the food bank.  Or, once can show up at the designated hours that the Food Bank is open. This often times is hard if you plan to go with friends if you want to stay together in a group since slots can fill fast  Donate money onto the food banks website  Conduct a personal drive with friends, family, and/or church organization to collect food from the community.

6 Who has the Food Bank teamed up with?  The Food Bank has teamed up with both the Soup Kitchen and Feed Children.

7 Why get involved?  Recent studies have shown that donations to the food banks have dropped over 50% since last year.  Research also showed that roughly 56% percent of the food banks consistent clients are elderly, who are often unable to work.  Plus, you’re logging service hours that benefits future job and college applications

8 Personal Experience  I have volunteered with the Utah Food Bank on numerous occasions, and have never left with a negative experience.  The volunteers were grateful to have me there to lighten the load.  The customers of the Food Bank were generally very grateful and complimentary. Sometimes customers cry out of gratitude, and offer their warm hugs.
