CONDITION AND SPEC FIRST, AGE AND SERIES SECOND

As soon as the first combines start to roll out of the shed for the current harvest campaign, canny buyers will start to put out feelers for used models that will be up for grabs for next season. Think a year ahead, and you stand a much better chance of securing the best used deals. Nothing new in that, but what should you consider if you are after a higher capacity Case IH Axial Flow?

Comment: Early ST tube model, with 65 t/hr potential when not chopping. Ideal for smaller arable farm looking for a high output over a much-reduced area than a younger buy. Fat front tyres and less durable 2500 header. Both AFX and AF ST models of an age where condition and cost of repairs relegate them to less intensive operation, but sound buy if well maintained.

Case IH launched the AFX 8010 Axial Flow combine in 2004, with the lower capacity AFX 7010 and higher capacity AFX 9010 increasing the range for 2005. These ‘10’ series models used the AFX rotor first launched on the previous generation AFX 2300 models but with an all-new cab, transmission and chassis shared with sister brand New Holland.

The AFX rotor was an important development for the Axial Flow system. Initially, the rotor had horizontal rasp bars to thresh the crop. This design was replaced in 1987 with a system employing angled rasp blocks, the AFX rotor replacing them with rasp blocks with increased spacing. The AFX system completely changes how the system works. Rather than work by ‘mechanically’ threshing the crop, the rasp blocks are spaced to exploit ‘crop on crop’ threshing which is less aggressive.

Comment: Early ‘20’ series model. Probably a better buy than a ‘10’ series, with much improved service access to the engine and fuel tank and stronger 3050 header. Case IH dealers less likely to have retail models on offer. The more hours a combine has completed, the more it will cost to maintain in dependable order. Balance saving in purchase price with increased service costs. Still a good buy for those who will not push to full capacity over a wide area but will your grain handling keep up with output?

matted crops and the swath exiting the AFX rotor is more baler friendly, with reduced shattering of dry and brittle straw. It is possible to swap between ‘standard’ 10° and 28° face angle rasp blocks, incidentally, the latter handling the straw even more gently. The downside is throughput is reduced, so make sure you know what type of block is fitted. They can be swapped relatively easily but there are 76 of them and they cost £35 each.

In 2007, the AFX rotor was superseded by the essentially similar but revised ST design. This shares the same separation area and dimensions as the AFX rotor, but the diameter of the tube carrying the rotor rasp blocks is decreased so increasing the clearance between the rotor and screens. This boosts the volume of material that is ingested through the rotor and with it boosts potential throughput by between 5% and 10%. The ‘10’ series with the ST ‘small tube’ rotor have the AFX combine model tag replaced with just AF.

Comment: A 7230 can make a top buy for those with a smaller acreage wanting to buy into a bit of capacity insurance. If looked after, a lightly worked model should have modest operating costs. Check the specs.

FURTHER REFINEMENTS BUT SAME CORE

For 2009, Case IH revised the styling and renumbered the range 7120, 8120 and 9120. These ‘20’ series models have a rear access ladder that makes getting up to the engine and tank easier (and safer) plus a host of detail improvements. Changes were again made in 2012, Case IH re-numbering to 7230, 8230 and 9230 and these models becoming the ‘230’ series. These combines were subsequently replaced by ‘240’ in 2015 and ‘250’ in 2016 (see model development outlines).

Note: model changes were typically matched to engine developments made to meet prevailing emission regulations. See model specs for engine output.

If you are on the hunt for a used buy, it is now the 230 through to 250 series that are more likely to be offered through a Case IH dealer, but do not go solely on model numbers as a guide to their production year, a previous ‘generation’ of combine often getting registered several months after it left the factory.

Comment: A well-presented ‘240’ series with a top spec in strong demand. You need to start your buying hunt early to get the models you want and expect to pay top money for the best examples.

<< Strong export demand for used UK kit tends to hoover up the vast bulk of ‘older’ combine models, making earlier examples less common. If you do come across an ST rotor AF ‘10’ series do not rule it out performance wise, a pampered AFX ‘10’ series also making a sound buy if you are lucky enough to come across a good one and it fits your projected workload. Case IH dealers will offer the used buying support you would expect for any models they supply, but it follows they will typically be less likely to have early examples to offer.

You get the header that comes with a used buy, a wide 10.70m or 12.50m header suiting some but not others. When looking over this vital element of the combine, make sure you pay attention to the trailer and take into account they cannot be towed by the combine on the road as the combination will exceed the legal overall vehicle length.

Be realistic if you buy a non-dealer prepared combine and expect unforeseen bills. Get your timing right and you can get any used buy dealer serviced, with prices starting at around £2,500, but you could almost add an extra zero to that if you have bought a combine that needs more than a little TLC.

You may be able to have a used buy professionally appraised if the seller agrees. A dealer may do this for you but not at a busy

time of year. There are no hard an fast rules to used combine prices, but you can expect to pay between £10,000 to £20,000 more for a combine that has been dealer prepared for sale, this typically buying you a well-sorted machine with a harvest long warranty.

HEADER, WHEELS AND TRACKS

Using the 8010 AFX models as an example, these were initially offered with either a 7.32 or 9.15m header, either a fixed knife 2040 or VariCut 2050 (In some markets a 2030

header was offered but not in the UK and most of Europe).

The 2040 has a fixed 600mm knife to auger clearance, the VariCut 2050 offering an adjustable from the cab auger to knife clearance of between 510mm to 1010mm. A heavier duty VariCut 3050 header, in widths of 7.60m and 9.15m, was offered on later AF ‘10’ series models with the ST rotor. By the time the ‘20’ series was launched in 2009, the VariCut 3050 was pretty much the default UK header choice with a wider 10.70m unit

With its overall increase in build strength, the 3050 VariCut header is better suited to UK conditions and can make choosing between entry level combines easier; given the a choice between a 2050 or 3050 header, go for the latter. The caveat is that the 3050 is heavier. VariCut drive is robust but keep an eye on the condition of the belts and chains. Stone and accident damage is easy enough to pick up, and knife sections and fingers obviously wear, but many used buyers do not invest the time and effort to look this element of the machine over. It is easy to spend a lot of money bringing a poor header up to scratch.

made available to fit the 8120 and 9120. Although the 3050 header is the most likely find on a 230, 240 or 250 series combine there may be alternative Case or third-party headers fitted so check. The 35ft table was joined by an even wider 12.20m header option for the 9240/9250, this 40ft width clearly suiting certain farms and not others. A 3100 Draper header designed for use in short straw is available, with widths of up to 13.60m. Do not expect to find one in the UK.

Case IH offered the 7000 to 9000 models with a choice of 2040 fixed and 2050 VariCut variable knife designs, the latter proving popular in the UK. The 2050 drive saw a few revisions to the initial design, the table itself proving less durable, particularly in wider 9.15m form. Likely to be the ‘weakest’ part of buying a ‘10’ or ‘’20’ series model.

The age-old conundrum of combine tyre size and transport width has not gone away, used buyer’s getting ‘stuck’ with what is on offer. Dealers are unlikely to offer a tyre swap to suit your needs. A modern VF tyre would have been offered on some 240 and most 250 series models. You may have to pay a premium on a used buy with them fitted, but they are worth having.

With a used buy, you will obviously get the header that comes with the combine, dealers being unlikely to offer a swap to match what you want. The same goes for front tyres. As a sweeping generalisation, a 7000 combine with a 7.60m header is more likely to have 710/70R42 front tyres, with wider 800/70R38 tyres on the 8000 and 9000 models.

Broader 900/60R32 and 1050/50R32 sizes are available and may well be fitted to a combine with the wide 12.20m header. From 2013, front tracks were offered as a factory, as opposed to retro fit, option. Tracks come

in widths of 610mm, 724mm and 860mm, the narrower option delivering improved flotation without compromising the combines overall width.

From 2018, the tracks were changed to a suspended design. These are claimed to ride better and deliver improved ground contour following for improved floatation. The later design has silver drive wheels so they are easy to spot. Powered rear wheels are a further option, all-wheel drive uptake reflecting local demands that many appreciate in challenging conditions.

With regards to the rear tyres, the ‘10’

series models were typically fitted with a 480/70R30 tyre, although wider options could be specified. The ‘20’ series were offered with 500/85R24, 600/65R28and 600/70R28 sizes, whilst the 230 series included a ‘standard’ 500/85R24 tyre but introduced the option of VF600/70R28, VF620/70R26 tyres. A conventional 750/65R26 size was also offered.

The VF ‘very high flexion’ tyre offers the ability to run at a much lower inflation pressure than a standard tyre carrying the same load. In practice, this also means you can run down the road at a field friendly tyre pressure without running the risk of damaging the tyre. A VF tyre spreads the load better in the field, so is well worth looking for on a used buy.

All models measure upwards of 3.49m across on the narrowest wheel option.

OTHER SPECIFICATION DETAIL

From the outset, the standard specification for the ‘7000, 8000 and 9000’ models would have reflected their status as top end machines. Terrain Tracker for auto header height and float control, hydraulic reel speed adjustment, a central header lock with a hydraulic multi-coupler, Advanced Farming Systems, AFS, touch screen monitor, a Rock Trap stone trap and other niceties coming as standard.

Wide headers, heavy combines, narrow lanes, wet harvests, and the need to spread the load. Case IH offered tracks for the ‘230’ series from 2013, the original design as pictured having no suspension as such. On the road, this can lead to a ‘lumpy’ driving experience but in the field the tracks do a good job: later ‘suspended’ design with silver drive wheels being superior. In the UK, the 600mm/24in track width is most common.

As you go through the various combine generations, several further changes and developments were made so you will need to be aware that a feature that is standard on an 8250 may have been an option on an earlier model or not even offered.

WHAT’S USED

At first glance, the mass of hydraulic pipes, belts and air lines under the side panels can look complex, but in practice these Axial Flow combines are mechanically ‘simple’ and service access is good. Pictured ‘10’ series is less ‘neat’ under the hood than later models, Case IH having tried hard to make working on these machines easier. In most instances, a worn or failed component can be changed without having to disturb items around it.

HOW MUCH POWER?

The engine output of the 7000, 8000 and 9000 combine models has increased. This, plus subtle design tweaks, will mean the potential output of each model has been improved. If you are moving to a newer model, think through its intended usage before just assuming you will need to stay with the same model ‘number’. A late 240 or 250 series 8000 has the potential to outperform an earlier ‘10’, ‘20’ and 230 series 9000.

Redekop straw choppers have proven a popular retrofit on higher capacity Axial Flow models, particularly when matched with 35ft to 40ft headers. Users suggest straw processed through these units is lacerated longitudinally, this helping to speed straw breakdown and with it reduce cultivation costs. The downside is power and fuel consumption, with most suggesting a 100 litre per day increase in thirst. Check the chopper knives, a complete new set taking time and money to replace.

Composite covers are light and easy to remove, allowing the concaves to be easily looked over in-situ. Note the mechanical levers that are used to select the transmission ratio (3 on the ‘10’ to ‘20’ series, 4 on the later models) and speed of the chopper to include N neutral for use when producing a swath.

SPEC OPTIONS TO LOOK OUT FOR

• Do not assume a VariCut 3050 header is fitted. The VariCut 2050 is a common find up to the 230 series but it is not as robust

• AFS AccuGuide or guidance ready. Even if you are not going to exploit any form of guidance, having a used buy that does or can be ‘easily’ upgraded will carry a premium. You could well ‘get this back’ when you move the combine on

• Cruise Cut laser guidance. Self-steering that works to the left or right of the combine. Not over common

I WISH SOMEONE HAD TOLD ME…

… check the rasp blocks. Most will have a 10 degree front face, but some will have a 28 degree block. Better straw, reduced throughput

… make sure the screens for pulses etc. are still with the combine. Does the header have a detachable header side-knife

… see if a header drawbar is fitted and check the header trailer is in good condition, to include the lights inspect the spare knife from end to end

… make sure any extras, such as the cool box in the cab and relevant owner’s manuals are all present

… ensure the header couples up and releases properly. Slight damage to the header or elevator is common

… take time to work through the AFS Pro screen menu and see what options, such as yield monitoring, are fitted. Too late to find something is missing when you have signed on the dotted line

… to always remove the AFS screen from the cab as they are easily stolen

… to not be afraid of asking for advice, the more so if you are less familiar with

• Moisture meter. A must have for a growing number of operators, a unit can be retrofitted but it will cost around £2,650

• VF rear tyres. Only offered from 250 series models, the highly flexible wall rear tyres are pretty much a default choice with combines running tracks

• From 2016, the cab benefitted from several detail upgrades and with it brought the choice of Comfort or Luxury cab. The latter is an easy spot with its Case red leather seats. Other Luxury extras include more storage space and a removable cooler box under the instructor seat, electric adjustable and heated mirrors

• On board air compressor offered from 230 series. A popular option, with air line outlets located around the combine

STRAW CHOPPER

Original AFX rotor ‘10’ series models had a

64 knife rotor that was factory upgraded to what was then called the 126 MagnaCut. By the time the 230 series arrived, the chopper was offered in Integral fixed knife type with 120 blades and 40 counter knives. The Xtra-Chopping System adds an extra hood mounted chopper to rear and replaces the twin disc spreaders with adjustable spreader vanes.

In the UK, the integral chopper is the most common fit, the chopper speed being reduced to around 300rpm with the knives guarded to form part of the straw handling system; crop flow through these Axial Flow models is extremely fast, with the crop spending just 4.0 seconds or so passing into the front of the rotor and back out the rear.

A popular third-party option, particularly on 9000 series models fitted with a 12.20m header is a Redekop chopper. Like the Case Xtra-Chopping System, the Canadian made

Redekop takes chopped straw from the combine, an extra 96 knives mounted in banks. This option is claimed to deliver a more even spread of straw across the working width and speed straw decomposition in the field.

Downside to the Redekop is it takes a fair amount of power to drive and it will increase fuel use by up to 100 litres per day. On the plus, some operators suggest cultivation costs are reduced and working conditions are improved, making up for the extra fuel used.

Summary: In mechanical terms, the 7000, 8000 and 9000 models of Axial Flow combine are all relatively ‘simple’, with hydraulic drive to the rotor and header reducing the number of belts and chains that need to be looked over. Service access is good and those familiar with these models will note the subtle tweaks that have been made between each series to generally make getting to certain pipes and components easier too. >>

Alternative concaves should come with the combine to cope with serial and small seed crops. Removing and refitting the concaves is quick and easy, so be prepared to remove them for inspection. Some users carry the alternative sets on the header trailer.

Case IH moved from twin to triple elevator slats from the ‘20’ series, the latter design having proven to be pretty robust. After the header, this element of the combine can give you a good idea of how the machine has been worked, damage here suggesting use in stoney conditions. Check the elevator trunking for signs of damage, warping here suggesting the head caught something that in turn has been transferred back to the rest of the combine.

WHAT’S USED

The alternative concave sets provided with the combine when new should be delivered with a used buy. The hydraulic side knife option can be removed or left attached to the header. Make sure you know what comes with the machine.

Case IH dealers will typically sell combines that are harvest ready, but this is not the same as saying every belt, bearing, knife or chain is renewed. The older and more worn the combine, the more it will cost to keep it running reliably. It is also important to get your used buy’s specification right.

The hopper lids and grain tank have changed over time, but all models should allow the combine to be run, as long as the tank is not full, with the lids closed. This may allow the combine to be worked under headland trees. On combines with a non-folding unloading auger, take care when turning. The auger extends beyond the rear of the combine.

The wrong header is obvious but there are other smaller differences that can have a big influence upon how the combine fits with your specific needs.

AFS Pro monitor will give you access to all the expected combine date, the actual controller staying with the combine when the screen is removed. This enables the monitor to be used with compatible CNH equipment but also makes it a great target for thieves. Always remove it when the combine is unattended as they can get nicked when the combine is ‘resting’ in the field.

The cab and controls of all models has evolved but even the earlier ‘10’ combines offer good driver accommodation. The AFS Pro 600 monitor does not have as many settings and features as subsequent 700 but it is unlikely to prove a handicap to those looking at a combine of this age.

AFX rotors have a larger diameter tube carrying the rasp blocks, the later ST rotor fitted to some ‘10’ series and all subsequent 7000, 8000 and 9000 models having a reduced diameter that enables more crop to pass through. Crop passing through the rotors accelerates up to 140m/second, crop on crop action proving the bulk of the threshing. Rasp blocks have a 10° face angle as standard, a 28° option providing a more gentle action to help boost straw quality but potentially reducing throughput.

The integral straw chopper is used to assist the passage of straw out of the combine, with the rotor speed reduced to 300rpm and the knives lowered. The sieves underneath are best removed when the combine is stored, rodents finding a cosey home beneath them.

MORE PERFORMANCE IN EVERY RESPECT

With the Xerion 12 Series, Claas presents uncompromisingly powerful specialists in the highest performance class for tractors. Available in the UK in Spring 2024, the two models come in above the Xerion 4200 - 5000 and feature the highly efficient low-engine speed drive concept 2.0, maximum power outputs of up to 653hp, the CEMOS operator assistance system, an enormous hydraulic pump capacity of up to 537 l/min and a new spacious cab with four-point suspension. In addition, the Terra Trac models are equipped with newly developed, damped crawler tracks –making them stronger than ever.

The two new more powerful 12.590 and 12.650 models are designed as highly efficient specialists for the toughest of draught work, such as pulling wide cultivators and seed drills as well as chaser bins.

The new Terra Trac triangular crawler track units transfer the power gently and efficiently to the ground, while the driver enjoys an excellent all-round view in the large, four-point-suspended cab. With a maximum power output up to 653hp and up to 3,100 Nm of torque, the Xerion 12 Series is currently

the most powerful four-wheel-drive tractor with continuously variable transmission technology on the market and features the familiar Cemos operator assistance and process optimisation system with Cmatic continuously variable transmission.

The new Xerion 12 Series with up to 653hp, 3,100 Nm, new Terra Trac crawler tracks, fourpoint-suspended cab with perfect all round view and hydraulic output of up to 537 l/min: strength is more than power.

The 15.6 l OM473 LA six cylinder in-line engine combines enormous torque with fuel efficiency and low maintenance costs. In the Xerion 12.590 this power unit delivers 585hp from 1,600rpm and up to 653hp in the Xerion 12.650.

Like all Claas tractors, the new Xerion 12 Series is equipped with the latest generation Cmatic continuously variable transmission –maintenance friendly, durable and perfectly matched to the engine’s optimal torque and consumption characteristics. In addition, the gentle starting and deceleration torque of the continuously variable, split-power drives protect cultivators and seed drills by avoiding peak loads on the frame structures and

hitching devices caused by abrupt shifting or engaging and disengaging with the implement in working position.

Thanks to four automatically selected drive modes, the transmission works with a high degree of efficiency, transferring power to both axles continuously. In combination with the multi-pass effect and the 50:50 weight distribution under traction, power is transferred to the ground without compromise while at the same time ensuring maximum soil protection – regardless of the steering angle. This means that full traction is available even when working on hilly ground or negotiating obstacles.

The Xerion 12 Terra Trac reaches a top speed of 40 km/h at an efficient 1,400rpm.

The large ground contact area in the Terra Trac ensures gentle and efficient transfer of tractive power and in combination with the efficient drivetrain, reduces fuel consumption by 8% to 10% compared with other tractor concepts in this hp class.

The cab has been extended by 27cm at the front, making it currently the largest command centre in the premium tractor segment.

MORE ACCURACY AND PRECISION

Kverneland has introduced a new fertiliser spreader to its line-up of Exacta twin disc models. A narrow frame model, it’s called the CL W Pro, and slots into the range below the CL Geospread version, replacing the single weigh-cell CL EW model.

The PRO specification brings more accuracy and precision over the CL EW thanks to the use of four 2.5 tonne capacity load cells in combination with a reference sensor, to improve weighing accuracy and reliability. With a full complement of weigh cells, the new CL W PRO is capable of achieving greater precision and application accuracy, through dynamic weighing. It also provides plug-and-play functionality, being ISO 11783 compatible.

Improving the technology available on this mid-spec machine also enables the spreader to carry out basic Geospread section control functions when purchased with a licence key.

In its most basic form, the Exacta CL W Pro offers a 1,300 litre hopper capacity, though it can be equipped with hopper extensions to boost carrying capacity. One extension delivers an 1,800 litre capacity; two extensions create 2,300 litres, and a third – the maximum available for this model – delivers a 2,800 litre hopper capacity.

The CL W Pro is capable of delivering a spread width from 10-33 metres. Its two

spreading discs each carry eight vanes, fed from Kverneland’s proven CentreFlow distribution system that starts the fertiliser acceleration process before it reaches the vanes, to minimise damage to the fertiliser.

Standard specification includes a folding hopper cover, hopper sieves, mudguards for disc and vane protection, ExactLine border spreading device, and LED road lights. Price of the CL W Pro starts from £15,910.

MAXIMUM STABILITY ON SLOPES

Alpine terrain demands the best from technology. Steep slopes, uneven terrain and huge differences in elevation, these are the operating conditions that Pöttinger knows very well being based in Austria.

With the Boss 2000 Alpin, Pöttinger now presents the latest revision to the Boss Alpin series. The central element of the three new models is the 1.80 metre wide pick-up, which they inherited from their big brother, the Boss 3000. In addition to a modern design, the Boss loader wagons have also been equipped with new on-board electronics. The Boss 2000 Alpin is available in three sizes with DIN loading volumes of 13.50m², 16.10m² and 18.70m²: BOSS 2140 Alpin, Boss 2160 Alpin, Boss 2190 Alpin.

MAXIMUM STABILITY ON SLOPES

Boss 2000 Alpin models are purpose-built, low-profile loader wagons. With a track width of 2.09m, the tyres are wider than the body for maximum stability. In addition to AS profile, tyres up to 520mm wide can be fitted. Mudguards are available as an option. These are at an angle so that dirt cannot accumulate. Thanks to the welded frame design, Boss Alpin loader wagons are particularly lightweight.

WIDE PICK-UP

The pick-up has an effective width of 1,800mm (DIN) and its freedom of movement has been greatly improved. In especially demanding terrain, a trailing jockey wheel chassis contributes to a cleanly collected crop. Ground tracking can also be optimised with the Autotast active parallel lift drawbar. The five tine carriers, which are guided by a cam track, are driven by a maintenance-free V-belt. A crop swath roller and flexible transfer plates are standard and ensure a perfect flow of forage with any type of crop.

SUPERMATIC LOADING UNIT

Maximum forage conservation with low power requirements are key characteristics of the Supermatic tine conveyor unit. As standard, the Boss 2000 Alpin has a six knife chopping system. A maximum of 16

knives can be installed. Each knife is equipped with its own individual protection system. At headlands, the loading unit and pick-up switch off automatically. This means that the loader wagon can be driven over swaths without disturbing them, while the tractor’s full power is available for turning around.

CONFIGURED ESPECIALLY FOR SMALL TRACTORS

Boss Alpin loader wagons can be operated with as little as 40hp and a pto speed of 540rpm. Just one double-acting and one singleacting remote with open centre are all that are needed to operate the loader wagon. This means that it can be used with older and/or smaller tractors. The drawbar can be attached to the tractor using a hammerstrap, the lower linkages, or a low K80 ball hitch. A drawbar extension enables operation with tractors fitted with wide tyres or dual wheels.

THE RIGHT CONTROL TERMINAL FOR EVERY OPERATOR

The standard system supplied with the Boss 2000 Alpin includes a Basic Control terminal. This enables the operator to preselect the functions for the pick-up and tailgate so they can be carried out using a spool valve on the tractor. An LED indicates whether the tailgate is open or closed. The optional hydraulic parallel lift drawbar can be operated using an additional spool valve.

KUBOTA INTRODUCES FB1000 NON-STOP FIXED CHAMBER, BALER WRAPPER COMBINATION

Kubota’s baler range has been extended with the arrival of the FB1000 – a non-stop round baler wrapper combination that integrates a pre-chamber, main chamber and wrapper.

Designed and developed at sister company Kverneland Group’s baler competence centre in Ravenna, Italy, the FB1000 uses two bale chambers arranged in series, to allow a number of rollers to be shared.

Operating as a pre-chamber, the front half of the FB1000 produces two-thirds of the bale. As the pre-chamber reaches its preset density, crop flow is diverted into the main bale chamber allowing baling to continue non-stop. The pre-chamber is then opened, moving the pre-formed bale into the main chamber, where it can be taken up to its maximum size of 1.25m.

Once bale formation is complete, crop flow is switched back to the pre-chamber without stopping, allowing round baling to continue as a non-stop process. Net is then applied to the completed bale in the main chamber. After which, the tailgate is opened and the finished bale is transferred onto the wrapper. This entire sequence enables baling to continue uninterrupted.

To make bale transfer simple, reliable and fuss-free, the FB1000 uses a wrapper frame mounted on a parallel linkage. This enables the wrapper to be lowered from its working position to collect the completed bale as it rolls from the main chamber. This avoids the need for a complex mechanical transfer system.

With the bale collected, the wrapper is raised to allow twin satellite arms to rotate around the bale. Unlike traditional wrapping mechanisms, the FB1000’s twin satellite arms rotate in a vertical plane. With the required number of film layers applied and the

satellite arms in their parked position, the wrapper frame is lowered to allow the rear wrapper roller to be raised, gently releasing the wrapped bale onto the ground.

An ISOBUS compatible machine, the FB1000 is operated through an IsoMatch Tellus PRO terminal, offering fully automatic control of the baling and wrapping processes, along with manual over-ride functions to suit changes in field topography.

Up front, the FB1000 is equipped with a 2m grass pickup with dual cam tracks, feeding crop through an 800mm diameter intake rotor. Overall baler length is kept short for transport by folding the wrapping table vertically behind the main bale chamber.

Operators can choose from a combination of 6, 12, 13 or 25 knives through the Super Cut crop chopping system. Knives benefit from spring-loaded protection, and the FB1000 includes a drop floor mechanism. The Kubota FB1000 is priced at £140,247.

COMPACT ALLELECTRIC PICK-UP

Electric Wheels unveiled the latest addition to their range of all-electric farm vehicles at Groundswell. The Pickman is a compact all-electric pick-up reminiscent of a farm cult classic, the Suzuki Jimny.

The Pickman comes fully equipped with LED lighting, reversing camera, power steering, a USB charger, a roof rack with lights and an infotainment system with Bluetooth connectivity. Its dual 7.5kW and 3kW motors deliver four-wheel drive, with a top speed of 40mph and a range of up to 70 miles from one charge. For farmers looking for a load-carrying vehicle, The Pickman can transport up to 500kg on its bed, with a similar towing capacity, and a four-door model is available.

Farmers could test drive the full range of vehicles on the Electric Wheels’ stand and The Pickman garnered lots of attention from passing visitors. From rolling out electric fencing to a quiet alternative to a noisy diesel machine for farm transport, those who drove the vehicle could easily see the opportunities for The Pickman on their farms.

“We are delighted to add The Pickman to our range,” said Electric Wheels’ managing director, Chris Hurdle. “It is a unique vehicle that has attracted significant attention from our customers at Groundswell. We have four machines available to demo this summer as part of our test market for The Pickman, and we expect to have a full launch for the vehicle in spring 2024.”

The anticipated retail price for The Pickman will be £20 - £22K +VAT, depending on model specification. Interested parties are encouraged to contact Electric Wheels through their website to book a demonstration or hire of the vehicle.

By the time you read this I will have been in Aberdeenshire and other locations in Scotland courtesy of Graham Burke of Pentland Auctions who I have worked with many times before. This is regarding a simply huge vintage-classic tractor sale that will be in two parts this autumn and next spring which I will tell you all about in our next issue.

I will also have been in The Netherlands courtesy of Des Boughton at the biggest tractor event of the year which again I will tell you about in our next issue. Please don’t forget the excellent Biddenden Tractorfest on 19-20 August which, since the Kent Agricultural Society has taken on the event, has hit new heights it’s a good day out for the family.

100TH ANNIVERSARY

On 7-9 July the Kent County Agricultural Society celebrated its 100th anniversary in glorious weather. On the Friday of the show it was our correspondent’s pleasure to be the heritage commentator at the show and it was his 49th year of doing it. His family exhibited at the show for decades with 1955 being the last time.

The first show was held on Thursday 23 June 1923 in Wombwell Hall Park, Gravesend. As for 1924 it moved to Barrow Hill, Ashford on 10-12 July 1924 with more than 100 trade exhibitors and 250 stock exhibitors, including His Majesty the King, who showed Shorthorn Cattle from the royal farms at Windsor.

The show was hailed an exceptional success. And so, the format for the next 80 shows was now beginning to emerge.

In those early days the show moved to a different location each year and following WW2, the Kent County Show resumed in 1947 under the presidency of Lord Lieutenant Cornwallis. Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Kent’s visit to the show on the first day was a great success. Early in 1948 the Kent County Agricultural Society received an invitation from the Corporation of Maidstone to consider the county town as the Kent Show’s permanent home.

After many meetings it was agreed to accept the offer for a period of 10 years, with the option to continue for 21 years or longer.

The 19th annual show was staged at Mote Park, the new permanent showground.

The visit by Winston Churchill and his wife Clementine was much appreciated that year. Churchill inspected a guard of honour drawn from the 489 H.A.A Regiment and the 6th Cadet Battalion, in his capacity as colonel chief of both units. His speech at the official luncheon was relayed around the main ring and many thousands of visitors listened. During the luncheon he was elected the first honorary life governor of the society.

The 1950 show was acclaimed as one of the most successful, as the weather had been perfect and by the end of the second day, all stands had been re-booked for the 1951 show. No doubt this trend of success would

have continued in earnest if it had not been for an outbreak of foot and mouth disease, which meant there were no cattle, sheep, pigs or goats at the 1952 show. This blow did not deter visitors, and trade stands were once again completely booked out for the following year. The Council had always endeavoured to maintain its primary objective that the Show existed to promote agriculture, and the Kent County Show had on more than one occasion been declared among the finest in the country.

The appalling weather and subsequent condition around Mote Park in 1960 caused some bad publicity and criticism of the Society for not providing permanent roads around the showground. On 21 October 1960, five members of the committee met at the Royal Star Hotel in Maidstone to discuss whether or not to devote money to improve site.

This was estimated to cost £40,000, with 70% paid by the society, and the remaining 30% by Maidstone Corporation. Despite the attraction of this scheme, the society felt that the financial commitment was beyond its resources. George Stevens had made extensive searches to find an alternative site, and concluded that the 38-acre site at WW2 Detling Aerodrome, which already had 11 or 12 miles of concrete roads, with adequate access at several points from the A249 would be a better purchase.

Kent Show Property Ltd was formed to deal with the purchase and under the charities act 1960, the society’s request for charitable status was acknowledged and registered. By February 4th 1963, George Stevens had been elected as chairman and the contracts

had been exchanged on Murrain Place and 10 acres. The Kent County Agricultural Society was now the proud owner of its own showground.

The last Kent County Show at Mote Park in Maidstone marked an important change for the Kent County Agricultural Society. The task ahead, to turn the grazing land at Murrain Place into a workable showground, would be a labour of love. Leading the changes was George Stevens who, together with a small team of experts, set about planning the grounds. The ground was seeded, with the direction of Edward Day. He felt that with proper farming, there would be enough grass by the 1964 show, despite the severe winter and not too promising summer.

HRH Princess Alexandra declared the new showground open on Wednesday 15 July 1964. The unusual layout of two large rings proved popular, as they provided a continuous programme in both throughout the show, while a concentration of agricultural machinery stands along each side of the main approach made an ideal introduction for visitors to the new grounds. That year Alan Day and his family offered to pay for the construction of a building for use as the secretary’s office in memory of the late Alfred Day, Honorary show director for many years. In recognition of Sir Leslie Doubleday’s generous financial donation, the Society’s registered offices would be called Doubleday House.

On 13 December 1988, Robin LeighPemberton received a letter from The Rt Hon Sir William Heseltine, private secretary to Her Majesty The Queen, to say that Her Majesty and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh would be

pleased to visit the Kent County Show on 14 July 1989.

The royal party arrived with seven vehicles at the Bredhurst Road gate at 12:30pm on Friday 14 July, where they were met by Viscount Falmouth and Alan Day. Three of the vehicles entered the gates of the showground, accompanied by two mounted police officers, and drove to the main ring. The first eight bars of the national anthem were played and the royal Standard was raised. The Queen’s final duty was to present the society’s longservice awards and a selection of trophies. A mere three days later, a letter arrived from Buckingham Palace to the chairman Edward Brice. Sir William Heseltine, on The Queen’s instructions, had asked for a special word of thanks from her and Prince Philip for arranging such a happy visit. In particular, Her Majesty was delighted that, given the shortage of time, she was able to see as much of the activities around the showground that she did.

Cheffins staged the late John Simpson alternative sale on Saturday 17 June at South Wold Farm, North Willingham, Market Rasen, Lincolnshire. John was a keen David Brown collector which the family are keeping at this stage, but the 79+ tractors offered here did very well indeed. Most had excellent tyres and good paint jobs and ran well considering the situation.

John was such a lovely person, kind and considerate and did much for many of us over the years. He was the leading light in the NTEC Lincolnshire branch for a number of years and of course was the leader of the David Brown Club at Newark Vintage Tractor Show for decades until his passing. Our correspondent certainly misses his chats with John who came on a number of his P & J Tours over the years.

As for the highlights well that came in the 14 Fordson Standards offered here. It started with lot 320 the RAF style 1942 industrial with

Scottish Aviation style cab that sold for £12,000 grade 4. Next was the hot one in the 1944 N Allcrop three-wheeler in grade 4 condition selling for a record price in current times £14,800. One has to say that 90% of these tractors were in running condition and looked good. Next on was the 1943 N industrial with front bull bar, rear winch, anchor; this ex forestry tractor wound up selling for £7,500.

John’s favourite a 1944 Utility went on to make £1,800 and has been rallied since in Norfolk. The best of the rest was the 1933 Fordson Standard N interim waterwasher with V5c selling at £5,900. Best price on the day went to the very clean original style 1986 Massey Ferguson 675 2WD C197KAR 1,838 hours at £17,000 an extra lot. It beat the Field Marshall Series 1 from John’s collection that was got away at a very strong £15,000 a record price for its condition. All in all a very satisfactory sale held in glorious weather.

STRONG MONEY FOR FORDSON ALLCROP RECORDS BROKEN IN SOMERSET

H J Pugh had quite a week when on Wednesday 21 June they sold at the late Adrian Shooter sale, Ashton Steeple, Oxfordshire a 2ft gauge 1889 0-4-0 Sharp Stewart ex Darjeeling Himalaya Railway steam locomotive No.19b fully restored and running for £250,000.

On the following Saturday at Upton near Somerton, Somerset just down the road from the Glastonbury Music Festival Henry Biss sold Mike Mitchell’s very late Roadless 980S-4 fully restored for a record £92,000. This well respected restorer came to the forefront some 15 years ago and has been a major winner in the West Country ever since. The prices achieved here were above average in many places.

There were other strong prices in the late Brian Lock section of the sale. Keeping the restored Ferguson tractors in an unheated shed had not done them any good although well restored mechanically the paint was going off in places and none were now in grade 5 condition although well presented.

His restored Ferguson implements stock were rather chipped and again very few were now grade 5 but still did well particularly

his 1954 Ferguson 30cwt no. 1205 steel tipping trailer grade 4.9 for a record price of £4,800. The 10 Ferguson restored tractors averaged £3,250 each.

Brian will certainly be missed by so many particularly members of the Ferguson Club of which he was the king pin locally. The best looking fresh restored tractor in the sale was the 1985 Massey Ferguson 699 4WD B167YUB which sold for £21,000 grade 5.
